SUMMARY:Julia Olson Lecture at Dickinson College (livestream)
DESCRIPTION:Join Dickinson College via livestream on February 26 to hear Julia Olson speak about the landmark lawsuit in which 21 youth plaintiffs are suing the U.S. government for their right to a safe climate. The plaintiffs\, who include a Dickinson student\, maintain that the U.S. government is violating their constitutional rights to life\, liberty\, and property through actions that cause climate change and through its failure to protect essential public trust resources. \n  \nJulia Olson\, Executive Director of Our Children’s Trust (OCT) and lead attorney for the plaintiffs\, and other representatives of OCT\, will be in residence at Dickinson College for the lecture\, advocacy workshop and other activities. They are recipients of the 2018 Rose-Walters Prize at Dickinson College for Global Environmental Activism. \n  \nThe lecture is open to the public and can also be watched via LIVESTREAM HERE. \n  \nNo Ordinary Lawsuit: Protecting our climate and democracy \n\nJulia Olson\, Executive Director of Our Children’s Trust and lead attorney for Juliana v. SUMMARY:Brett Jenks Lecture Available via Livestream
DESCRIPTION:WHY THE BIGGEST BARRIER TO SOLVINGOUR CLIMATE CRISIS MAY BE IN OUR HEADS\nJoin Rare CEO and 2017 Rose Walters Prize recipient Brett \n\nJenks for a thought-provoking session that illuminates how the biggest barriers impeding conservation climate solutions lie not in the natural world\, but rather in our brains and ourselves. \nHumans are very complicated beings. And while we love recounting simple heroic stories\, we aren’t very good at diagnosing\, much less understanding\, what actually brings about such seismic shifts. Consider bloodletting or abolition or a woman’s right to vote? What motivated such huge shifts in the way people treat themselves and each other? These epic shifts in social norms around health practices\, politics and commerce are quite similar to the dramatic transformations we now seek in creating a sustainable world. \nSo what makes change? What do we know? And what is being learned in behavioral economics\, social psychology and neuroscience that will let us become the change agents we need to be? This will be the focus of our discussion. \nOct. 10\, 2017 | 7:00 p.m.\nDickinson College Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium\n360 W. Louther Street\, Carlisle PA 17013 \nThe event is free and open to the public\, or via livestream. \nContact sustainability@dickinson.edu for more information.

SUMMARY:EcoLeague Faculty Scholar Davis Taylor to Speak At Northland College
DESCRIPTION:Unusual Economics: A Sustainable and Cooperative Future \nDavis Taylor\, professor of economics at the College of the Atlantic\, will speak at Northland College about cooperatives and a sustainable economic future for both rural and urban communities Wednesday\, September 21 at 7 p.m. at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. \nThis event is sponsored by the Northland College Center for Rural Communities and the EcoLeague\, a consortium of six colleges and universities that share missions based on environmental responsibility and social change\, including College of the Atlantic and Northland College. Professor Taylor’s visit is made possible by an EcoLeague Faculty Scholar Grant\, a program which encourages faculty at member schools to collaborate with each other in areas of teaching and research across institutions. \nTaylor pursues research in various forms of economics as well as sustainable community development. He has presented papers that expand upon the concepts of community and model the human ecology of forests. His current research efforts include the economics of food systems\, the role of institutions in shaping economic development\, and the ecological economics of resource collapse. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
