One Heartland is a national non-profit summer camp helping improve the lives of children, youth, and families facing significant health challenges or social isolation. The communities we serve are youth living in transitional housing, youth affected or living with HIV/AIDS, young people identifying as LGBT and families striving to achieve a healthy lifestyle. The program intern will learn the steps to successfully working in a non-profit setting and learning what goes into all the aspects of a summer camp. They will work closely with the camp director, program coordinator, and other One Heartland staff to continue with creating, designing, educating and building summer camp programs in a setting that nurtures a place of acceptance for all.

Various positions are available at the summer camp.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Spring Internship January-May (flexible start and end dates)

Lead: Will help guide volunteer groups in service learning
Educate: Will design education components around our communities to share with volunteer groups
Research: Find foundations and businesses for grants and donation opportunities
Design and Implement: Create new and establish activities for summer programs
Fundraise: Help increase program funds with our annual Party with Heart fundraiser
Recruit: New volunteer groups, post volunteer opportunities, attend volunteer, job and career fairs at local universities and organizations
Learn: Attend staff meetings, organization fundraisers and work closely with our camp director, program coordinator, and facility manager

Summer Internship May-August (flexible start and end dates)

Assist: Learn from the Camp Director, Program Coordinator, Registration and Travel Manager and all other leadership coordinators with all general camp management
Lead: Train and mentor all summer program staff and volunteers on items such as child development, activity skills, behavior management, risk management, communication and teamwork
Plan: Create team building activities to implement for staff training
Schedule: Conduct weekly meetings with summer staff in individual setting
Implement: Plan program design of camp for program and staff schedules, activities, and education
Hire: Interview, select and train summer program volunteers and help assist with hiring our
Leaders-In-Training and Junior Counselors

  • Give forms to 3 different professional references (not family members) to fill out on your behalf

Step 4

In addition to filling out these mandatory forms a staff member will be in contact with you to set up a phone or in-person interview. All volunteers including return volunteers will need to complete this interview to be considered for summer 2016.
